North East Film Archive

The Yorkshire and North East Film Archives exists to find, preserve and provide public access to moving images made in, or about Yorkshire and the North East of England.

The Archive collections total in excess of 70,000 and are made up of largely non-fiction material, held largely on film and various videotape formats, though contemporary material is increasingly acquired on a range of digital formats. Collections range from regional television news and programmes, through to advertising collections, the output of local cine clubs, community and amateur filmmakers, and astonishing home movie collections revealing a rich social history of everyday life over each decade of the 20th century.

In June 2022, the Yorkshire and North East Film Archives were recognised for their work by FOCAL International, winning the ‘Company of the Year’ Award. In June 2023, they were also awarded ‘Footage Person of the Year’ and ‘Best Use of Footage in a Short Film Production’ by FOCAL International.

Social Cinema

Social Cinema brings together four short films, all produced by the Yorkshire and North East Film Archives. These films speak to social and political issues including gender equality, homelessness and poverty, isolation, and environmental justice. A rollercoaster of emotions, sometimes sad but full of hope too; asking us questions about ourselves, our communities, our society and what we can learn from the past. This screening will be introduced by a member of the archive team.

Nature Matters

A series of archive films exploring nature and industry in the local Teesside area will be shown on loop throughout the duration of the Weekender. The films reflect an ever changing landscape and ask questions on how best nature and industry can be integrated both now and in the future. The films are part of the Yorkshire and North East Film Archives current National Lottery Heritage Funded project Nature Matters. The project involves using moving image to explore one of the most important issues of our time: the impact of climate and environmental change on our natural landscapes. The project involves digitising content, engagement and events and contemporary collecting, which means looking to archive films with environmental themes made in the last twenty years.
