Lee Cutter

Lee Cutter is an artist, exhibitions producer and workshop leader. His interests are with social change, overlooked communities, and the role art can play in giving those on the fringes of society hope, and a voice.

Lee first engaged in the arts during his late teens while serving time in a Young Offending Institution. An officer had left a pencil in his cell one day by accident, and he used it to write and draw onto any scrap material he could find - an envelope, a cereal box, a bar of soap - unknowingly at the time, that this small act would slowly turn his life around. Since his release in 2009, Lee has made the most of opportunities to create, curate, write about and present visual artwork, audio and writing, often with organisations that offer encouragement to people residing in prison.

In 2022 Lee produced Freedom, a Koestler Arts exhibition co-curated in partnership with Ai Weiwei and displayed at London's Southbank Centre. It showcased over 1,850 artworks made by people in secure settings across the UK and created employment opportunities for people with lived experience.

Lee regularly leads workshops in prisons and the outside community. He is a fellow of the Jerwood Curatorial Accelerator, Alumni of the Royal Drawing School and University of Sunderland, has exhibited works at the Royal Academy of Arts, Christie’s and NGCA, and has works held in The Royal Collection, Dumfries House Collection and The National Art Library at the V&A Museum.
